Kai Schäfer

Kai Schäfer

Kai Schäfer lives and works in Düsseldorf as a professional photographer. Since 2011, Kai Schäfer has been working intensively on his first major art project "Worldrecords". For this series, which now includes more than 100 photos, he photographs the great albums of music history - including, among others, The Clash, Pink Floyd and Kraftwerk - in oversized large format on disc players, some of which have even become a legend. The result is a tribute to unforgettable analogue soundscapes; a tribute to the most sensitive type of sound medium.

For this series, he developed his own light, to blur the boundaries between photography and painting, which makes the images even more unique... Its expression is ideal in large format. Every groove, every label, every component of the reading arm is oversized and seems within reach, the sound becomes almost audible. The special light that Kai has developed helps to make these effects real. In his series "Worldrecords" Kai Schäfer draws from Rolling Stone Magazine "The 500 greatest albums of all time".

He photographs the original vinyl pressings of the emblematic albums of the history of music, on the decks where they would have been first played.

With already more than 100 images, "Worldrecords" offers pop titles of legends of Rock'n' Roll icons such as AC / DC, David Bowie and Pink Floyd, crooners such as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, or more experimental pioneers like The Velvet Underground and Kraftwerk.

Alongside the methodical nature of this work is the idea that music can resonate with our individual experiences through listening.

"Worldrecords" is a methodical catalogue of an era when the listening experience was more physical and tactile; but this series is also contemporary, with the resurgence of audio files, by putting on a pedestal the vinyl pressings as objects of art. Kai Schäfer pays tribute to these unforgettable analog sounds and sound experiences that highlight each groove, label and key, so that these images become tangible - subtly audible in their nostalgia.
